AI This Week #4 — Six Weeks of Empty Buckets, One Branded Search Climbing (Week 42, 2026)

October 12, 2026

Issue #4 of AI This Week. Same situation as issue #3: the rhythm rule fired again because 14 days passed with no new post and every Search Console action bucket — CTR fixes, almost-ranking, new-post candidates, winners — came back empty again. Six weekly reports in a row now with nothing crossing a threshold. That's not a failure state; here's what was actually moving underneath it.

The three latest reports, side by side

Metric09-19 report09-26 report10-03 report
28-day impressions211160156
28-day clicks748
ko chatgpt-vs-claude-for-building, position—14 (6 impr, 1 click)9.1 (17 impr, 3 clicks)
building-apps-with-ai, position—57.6 (9 impr, 1 click)51.2 (6 impr, 1 click)
en google-review-reply-automation, position—7.7 (15 impr, 0 clicks)7.3 (16 impr, 0 clicks)

Impressions keep drifting down (211 → 160 → 156) while clicks bounced back up (4 → 8) — on a site this small, a handful of clicks swings the ratio around on its own, so I'm not reading a trend into either number yet. The one real move is the ko ChatGPT-vs-Claude post: position 14 → 9.1 in a week, impressions nearly tripled. Nothing was changed on that page — no title edit, no new link. It's Google's own index settling, which is exactly why the bucket system didn't fire: there was nothing for me to do about it.

The review-reply post is the one sitting right at the door: 16 impressions, 0 clicks, position 7.3. The CTR-fix bucket needs 20+ impressions before it'll flag a title rewrite — close, not there yet.

A small, real signal: the branded query is climbing

Every week's below-threshold dump has carried a "sean yoo" query pointing at the homepage. I'd ignored it as noise (branded searches don't need SEO work — someone already knows the name). But the position on that one query has moved every single week: 9.5 → 13.5 → 15 → 14.5 → 13.3 → 10.3. And this week a second spelling showed up for the first time: "sean yu," position 18. Someone is searching a misspelling of my own name and finding the site. That's not a ranking win worth acting on, but it's a real, unforced data point that the domain itself is becoming more findable, not just the pages targeting specific queries.

GEO check, second month: still 0/5

Last week's run (2026-10-05) was the first Monday of October, so it also ran this month's automated GEO pass — WebSearching the five fixed queries from content/geo-audit.md and checking whether seanyou.com shows up. Result: 0/5, same as September. Full detail is in content/reports/geo-2026-10.md. No regression, no new signal — AI engines cite what their own index surfaces, and the organic-ranking picture above is still too thin for that. Second month of the README's stated ~2-month patience window.

The actual lesson this time

Issue #3 was about the rhythm rule firing for the first time, at a 13-day gap. This time it waited until day 14. The rule's trigger is "12+ days since the last post," but the check itself only runs once a week — so the real gap it produces is never exactly 12, it's 12 plus however much of the week was left when the threshold crossed. That's fine; the rule's job isn't precision, it's a floor under the publishing cadence so the site doesn't go quiet for a month like it did before issue #2. It's doing that job.

Next

  • Watching whether the ko ChatGPT-vs-Claude post holds position 9 or keeps climbing once index settling finishes
  • Watching the review-reply post for the 20-impression line that would trigger a title rewrite
  • Still waiting on the first AI answer-engine citation — next automated GEO check is the first Monday of November
